I am a wildlife and landscape photographer based in Johannesburg, South Africa. Born with a passion for the outdoors, I travel through Africa photographing the events and nuances of the natural world. I endeavour to evoke an emotion through my photography, which evolved from a life-long passion for nature. The pursuit of capturing the unique beauty of a location motivates me to invest as much time as I do out in the wilderness, where I am focussed on nothing else than to potentially create a photograph with enough emotion and visual drama to tell a story; in an attempt to convey to the viewer the immense beauty of that experience. The photographs on this website portray my passion for this, in a way that is both creative and natural, sometimes pushing the boundaries to obtain that unique perspective on our natural world. I photograph nature in its purest form because I love it, and I love to share my work with people who appreciate it.
I have been interested in nature and wildlife since I was very young, and have made endless visits to the wilderness areas of Africa since. Through these experiences, I have gained a vast understanding of mammals and birds, which is a great benefit when photographing them, a great understanding of your subject is key! I have travelled extensively throughout my home country of South Africa, and also cross international borders into Botswana, Lesotho, Zimbabwe, Kenya and Namibia seeking photographic potential. Africa, with its magnificent diversity and abundance of wildlife and spectacular landscapes, is a truly special place to me and I feel very privileged to able to visit these areas time and time again, to capture the many special moments it bestows upon me.
I don't think I could choose one specific favourite destination to photograph. There are just so many unique differences, and each in their own way harbour a special place in my heart. But, if I had to choose my top ten locations I have photographed, these would be them; Blyde River Canyon, Masai Mara in Kenya, Namibia’s Deserts, the Makgadikgadi Pans in Botswana, the incredible Okavango Delta, Greater Kruger National Park, The Kalahari Desert, Drakensberg Mountains, Richtersveld National Park and then the Western Cape Coastline. It really is a magical experience exploring these areas with my camera, and I think through photography I have built up a much larger appreciation for these places than I would have had I not taken up photography.
I got my first DSLR camera back in April of 2007. I used a small point & shoot camera before that, but it was this step up to a more advanced camera when photography became a very serious hobby of mine. I am very thankful to have had some good friends show me about advanced photography, and I learned a lot from them about composition, techniques and post processing etc. I’ve attended a few training courses and learned a lot from reading, talking to other people, photographing with them and spending as much time as possible with a camera out in the field. I currently use the Nikon brand for my photographic needs.
I am an ambassador for a Photographic Safari company called Wild-Eye. Together with them I host workshops and safaris all over Africa, guiding people through photographic techniques, and above all else showing them the characteristics of Africa that never cease to amaze me. Click here for a full list of all the workshops and safaris I am currently hosting.
I have been inspired by many local wildlife and landscape photographers over the years, some of them good friends and some I’ve never met. Thanks must go out to these people as they have helped and inspired me get to where I am today with my photography. A huge thank you must also go out to those viewing this website, sharing in the experiences and moments I have captured.
