I live on the Highveld, and spend a great deal of my time photographing here. From the Marievale Bird Sanctuary, Rietvlei, Borakolalo and Pilanesberg Nature Reserves, to the various wetland spots around the Gauteng Province, I built up my craft as a wildlife photographer. Years of practice, endless early morning visits and patience rewarded me with some amazing experiences.
A Cattle Egret in breeding plumage comes in to land at a breeding colony, usually found in big trees.
From the shallow waters of Baberspan, a Black-winged Stilt takes to the air, photographed from a low-to-the-ground angle.
A mother Black-backed Jackal allowed me a fantastic opportunity to photograph her. I was photographing from my vehicle and she seemed so relaxed. I then decided to alight from my vehicle, and get onto the ground for a lower angle. She stayed really calm, and allowed me to get closer to her. I managed this full frame image of her relaxed on a patch of barren earth.
Cape Shoveler in Flight
A male Cape Shoveler in flight passing the purpose built bird-watching hide in the Marievale wetland as the first golden rays of sunlight illuminates the scene.
Female Pied Kingfisher
A female Pied Kingfisher takes to the air in search of food, in a different area to which she was hunting before. Distant mountains create a beautiful out of focus background, together with the blue sky creating the two-toned effect.
A full Moon presents itself early morning, creating a backdrop to a perched Black-headed Heron. Two exposures was used here for depth of filed, rendering the bird and moon sharp.
Beautiful dappled sunset light falls onto the face of a young male Lion through trees.
Perched on a small twig, an adult Malachite Kingfisher scans the water for prey below in the still waters as the golden light of morning compliments the scene with a golden tinge.
The morning sun rises over the highveld to the east, silhouetting and Ostrich as it feeds in the cool, misty air. A small flock of birds fly past, completing the photograph.
Owl At Twilight
Twilight in the sky creates a soft blue hue in the background, complimenting the adult Spotted Eagle Owl perched high up in a tree.
Rising Malachite Kingfisher
Spending years in a bird hide, waiting for that perfect moment when opportunity, skill and luck meet, resulted in a moment I am very proud of. I have tried to capture a "natural (non-baited)" photograph of a Malachite Kingfisher rising out of the water for many years, and finally my patience and dedication paid of with this image. A special moment in time in my photographic journey.
Most commonly seen at night, the Spotted Thick-knee searches the ground for insects. I photographed this bird on my stomach, crawling through the dirt to obtain a perfect eye-level perspective, using a hand-held spotlight for illumination.
Beautiful colours painted across the sky by the rising sun form a perfect background to this silhouetted Blesbok.
Urban Spotted Eagle Owl
I photographed this Spotted Eagle Owl in my complex at home in Johannesburg, using a torch to illuminate the bird from the side and using distant house lights adding to the dark background. These owls nest in our complex every summer.
View From A Terrapin
A male Impala comes down to drink at the Terrapin hide at Jaci's Lodge in Madikwe. Photographing from a low angle emphasized the specular highlights on the water creating a decorative effect on the foreground.
A black and white conversion to a simple Zebra Portrait gives the image a more dramatic feel than colour would. It doesnt work on every image, but certain images lend themselves to work better, stripped away of all colour.
Early morning golden light splashes across the landscape, as a Long-tailed Widowbird performs his flight-display in search of a mate.
