The south-west region of Africa is one of stark beauty. Namibia and the Northern Cape province of South Africa share similar characteristics - arid, desolate, remote and so incredibly photogenic. The Namib Desert stretches for more than 2000 kilometers and is considered the oldest desert in the world. This country is a photographers' paradise.
Balance Of Light
Three forms of light balance together to create this photograph. Starlight, astronomical twilight and artificial light. The Quiver Trees are composed as if reaching up to the most fascinating form of light, the Milky Way. The challenge was to perfectly balance all three forms of light into a pleasing photograph.
Thunderstorm Over The Naukluft
Evening thunderstorms build over the Naukluft mountains to the east of Sesriem as twilight softens the colour palette. Trees dot the arid landscape below made even drier by the lack of summer rains.
Twilight Colour Palette
A crescent moon hangs low in the clear, twilight sky of sunset. Beautiful colours from the setting sun tinge the atmosphere in soft hues signalling the end of a very hot day over the harsh environment of the northern Cape.
Dawn Over Desolation
Clouds roll in from the west as morning sunrise light majestically shines through illuminating the massive dunes surrounding the Camelthorn graveyard known as Dead Vlei.
Rain to the north of Sesriem falls onto the mountainous landscape creating quite a stark contrast of moisture on the arid and desolate landscape.
On The Fringe Of Darkness
The moon reaches the horizon to the west, setting and bringing complete darkness to the arid and desolate landscape of the Fish River Canyon. A lone Quiver Tree stands alone in this harsh environment.
Late afternoon sunlight casts long shadows onto the cracked, clay surface at Dead Vlei in Namibia.
The milky way burns bright above a trio of Quiver Trees, standing tall reaching up to the starry night sky above.
Forming Double Rainbow
Heavy rain falls from above, illuminated by the afternoon sunlight, forming a double rainbow over the incredible landscape of the Namib Rand.
Namib Double Rainbow
Heavy rain falls over the Namib Rand Conservancy in Namibia, illuminated by the late setting sun, creating a very striking double rainbow.
Namib from The Air
A hot-air balloon ride over the Namib desert is a magical experience. Seeing the dynamic landscape below side-lit by the rising sun was a moment of pure photographic bliss.
Heavy winds whip up fine sand creating dramatic conditions high up on top of the famous dunes of Sossusvlei in Namibia. The setting sun illuminates the patterns of these dunes as it reaches the crest of the background dune.
Namib Naukluft Sunrise
The sun rises over the horizon breaking through partly clouded skies, splashing the Namibian landscape in a golden glow. Fairy Circles dot vast areas of Namibia.
Namib Rand Sunrise
A ten-stop ND filter blurs the sunrise clouds in streaks, as the first light of dawn casts its golden glow onto the Namibian landscape of the Excelsior Farm in the Namib Rand conservancy.
Milky Way over Kokerboomkloof
The Milky Way burns bright over the desolate but beautiful landscape of the Richtersveld. Quiver Trees (Kokerboom) stand proud in this harsh environment, reaching up to the stars above.
Morning sunlight illuminates a dune in the Namib Naukluft Park in a striking display of colour.
Cloudy skies cover the Namib Naukluft Park during a late summer afternoon. Patterns of sand dunes created by wind are emphasized a lot more the lower the sun angle becomes.
The first stars appear in the twilight sky, as the sun fades leaving the landscape bathed in an ethereal glow.
Twilight engulfs the early morning sky over the Richtersveld Desert, while the last of the stars shine through.
An almost full moon rises over the arid Richtersveld National Park, contrasted by an alive and dead Kokerboom pair of trees.
Flaming Namibian Rainfall
The last light of day illuminates heavy falling rain in hues of oranges, giving much needed moisture to the barren landscape of the Excelsior Farm in the Namib Rand conservancy, Namibia. The already spectacular landscape takes on an even more spectacular mood underneath epic, stormy light.
Namib Sand Dunes
Wonderful patterns created by wind form on the enormous, iconic red dunes of the Namib Naukluft.
The Dead and Dry
A group of scorched Camel Thorn trees scattered across a barren white clay pan in the heart of the Namib Desert create one of the most amazing landscapes I have ever photographed, Dead Vlei.
Late afternoon setting sunlight illuminates the Earth's atmosphere in wonderful hues of pinks over the Kokerboomkloof valley in the Richtersveld.
The morning sun rises to the east during a calm morning, casting light onto high clouds above the Namib Rand, known for immense beauty and arid tranquility.
Quiver Tree Dawn
The sun rises to the east shining pink hues onto the Earth's atmosphere in the west, creating another clear, perfect dawn over the Quiver Tree Forest of Keetmanshoop.
Sunset over Keetmanshoop
Sunset falls across the barren but beautiful Quiver Tree landscape of Namibia.
Sunset over the Namib
Sunset light paints the clouds above the Namib Naukluft Park in hues of oranges, complimenting the orange colour of the dunes.
A simple sunrise can speak a thousand words. The sun rising to the east reflects onto clouds above in an inspiring array of colours. A magical morning in Namibia.
The Fall of Light
Light enters Dead Vlei on a warm morning, casting shadows and light creating dynamic shapes on the landscape.
Heavy twilight skies to the west illuminate the Quiver trees and atmosphere in soft warm hues, whilst an almost full moon rises to the east and stars begin to appear. A long exposure of 30 seconds was needed to render a good exposure of the twilight scene helped on by the moon light from above. I was surprised by the power of the western twilight on the base of the Quiver trees as it was quite dark, but helped enrich the already striking colours of the trees.
A Twin Kokerboom creates symmetrical shadows on the arid land of the Richtersveld National Park in the Northern Cape region of South Africa.
Moment of Twilight
The first light of dawn paints the sky and landscape in soft hues of yellows and oranges as another hot day begins over the vast and arid landscape of the Fish River Canyon. In the foreground, two Quiver Trees stand strong in this harsh, yet beautiful part of the world.
Beautiful light falls across the harsh, yet tranquil landscape of the Namibian Desert as sunrise marks the beginning of another day.
A Couple Of Trees
Soft light painting illuminates two Quiver Trees standing tall with the Milky Way burning bright overhead.
Wind forms beautiful patterns in the sand close to Sossusvlei in Namibia. Low angled morning light helps accentuate these beautiful details.
