I am often asked what gear I use for my photography and videography, so I’ve created this page to answer that question. Below you will find a list of all of the camera gear I use, both in the field and in my Youtube studio. I have included links to the post processing software I use as well.

CAMERAS & LENSES

MAIN CAMERA - Nikon Z8

This is one beast of a camera, especially for wildlife photography! The auto-focus is just so good and the image quality outstanding. I recently upgraded from the Nikon Z6ii and I can’t even begin to tell you how happy I am with this upgrade. The Nikon Z8 is definitely the best camera I have ever owned.

TELEPHOTO LENS - Nikon Z 180-600mm f/5.6-6.3

This is a lens I have waited a very long time for! When I switched to mirrorless in 2020, I had a Nikon 200-500mm f/5.6 lens that I used with an FTZ adaptor on the Nikon Z6. It was a good combo, but I’m so excited to finally have the 180-600mm on order. My thoughts on the lens will follow once I have used it.

WIDE TO MID-RANGE LENS - Nikon Z 24-120mm f/4 S

This is a great all-round lens that serves me well for landscape photography, but also for wider wildlife shots. I also really enjoy this lens for video. The constant aperture and sharpness of this lens is superb, and I love the results I get from this one. 24-120mm is also a range I love when I go hiking.

SUPER WIDE ANGLE LENS - Nikon Z 14-30mm f/4 S

For that wide approach to landscape photography, this is a lens I really enjoy! I love the perspective that 14mm gives, and I could not do without this lens for landscape photography. The quality of this lens is great and I really enjoy the small size and weight. The 82mm filter thread is a great addition on a 14mm wide angle lens, so the use of filters is very easy.

AUDIO

MAIN MICROPHONE - Rode Video Mic GO II incl. WS-12 Windshield

This is a great shotgun style microphone, great for studio and in-field use, at a very affordable price. I enjoy using this mic for vlogging as well. It is my intention to add the Rode Video Mic NTG to my kit in the future, forming a great pair of microphones, one on each camera for when I am filming wildlife.

AUDIO RECORDER - Zoom H1n incl. Zoom WSU-1 Windshield

I use this audio recorder so much and the quality is great. I primarily use it in studio, the preamp quality is better on the Zoom H1n than my Nikon Z6. I also use the Zoom H1n for stereo ambient sound recordings in the field. I like how small and light this audio recorder is, it’s always in my bag ready to go.

LAV MICROPHONE - Hollyland Lark M1 Wireless Lav Microphone

This lav mic is very affordable, and produces very good results. I like using this wireless lav mic in the field if I am standing a bit further away from the camera. The wind shield provided also produces good results in windy environments. There are better wireless microphones out there, but the affordability of this is a huge strong point.

VIDEO FILTERS

Filters are very important tools for capturing video, mainly to help achieve the 180deg shutter. I am still learning a lot about video, but I feel my skill is advancing enough to enter into the world of more cinematic video creation and the use of specialised filters. PHOTO FILTERS

A circular polariser and 10-stop ND filter are an absolute necessity for my landscape photography. Nisi filters are top quality and I wouldn’t use anything else. I prefer the circular style filters, basically because they are smaller than square filters and less cumbersome to use, they are also light for use when hiking too.

2ND TRIPOD - 3 Legged Thing Punks Travis Tripod

To be honest, I got this tripod as a cheap second tripod, one I use for video mainly. The magnesium alloy construction is not as nice as a carbon fibre construction, but the tripod isn’t very heavy, and its very versatile, so I like it.
